In 1972, Aeroflot started to operate a new jet plane, the TU-154, designed in the bureau headed by A. N. Tupolev, the famous Soviet aircraft designer. Like many other planes forming the numerous TU family, the jet liner is distinguished for its streamlined shape and excellent performance characteristics.
It is intended for medium-range air services and can easily be operated in various climatic zones, as it depends very little on weather conditions. The TU-154 is well known to people in various countries in Africa, the Middle East, South-East Asia, and to virtually all Europe.
A descending TU-154 looks very much like a big and nice bird-because of its smooth and magnificent movements. It takes off so easily that one immediately forgets about its dimensions. However, the plane is 47.9 metres long and its wings span for 37.5 metres.
Its cruise speed is such that it falls into the category of high-speed machines: it covers 850 kilometres an hour. Three powerful turbofan engines, which make it so fast, are located in the tail part. This alone reduces the level of noise in the passenger saloons.
Depending on the routes to be served and cost requirements, the plane has several layout options. One option inscludes a first-class saloon catering for 12 passengers, and two tourist-class saloons, for 18 and 96 passengers respectively. The second option has 152 tourist-class seats. The third option with its 160 seats is intended for short-range services, taking only minimum of flight time.
A blend of elegance and efficiency is what how people characterize the interior of the saloons. Everything is well thought of and the passengers' interests were well taken into account by the designers. Windows are provided on both sides, at a half a metre interval, so that all passengers can enjoy the sight of the so different and so equally dare to all land, disappearing during take-off in the blue mist. Even old-timers do not usually miss the opportunity of enjoying the fantastic combinations of clouds seen through the windows. Each window is provided with a sun filter.
The galley has everything necessary for the air hostesses of the TU-154 to offer passengers a long menu of Russian and European cuisines, various hors-d'oeuvres and drinks.
We are sure that whatever the route, a flight aboard the Soviet high-speed comfortable liner, the TU-154, will become a pleasant experience.
